military soldier

My grandfather came to America Veitri di Potenza in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy. He arrived in Buffalo NY and earned the nickname "The side of the wheel, as he oiled the engine of New York Central steam. My father was later called "The Wheel" as all his friends grew up with nicknames. It was fun because as a child he did not know their real names. Simply "The Bird", "The Weasel" and his brother Jumbo. It was a second generation of Italian origin. Like many men and women of every race and ethnicity in the 1940s, which began at Fort Dix in New Jersey and found himself in England in June 1944.
For the purpose of telling their story, I will call his name, James. Like many of his peers, there was little talk of war and soaked in every detail when it opened on this a little. He loved "The Longest Day", and I wish you could see "Saving Private Ryan" as he would have liked a lot.
In 2006, The National Purple Heart Hall of Fame was created in Valls Gate, NY. When I heard, I wrote a letter with some pictures and other attachments.
Dear Friends of Purple Heart recipients:
Thank you for creating this hall of honor and recognition.
My father Private First Class James was a member of the Fourth Division, the Medical Unit, 8th Infantry Regiment. A WWII veteran, and four years a month of its story is very interesting if not surprising. I have included many documents in the folder to help document their experience.
I'll tell you some details on this letter, I said (like many veterans who rarely speaks of the war) to clarify and expand the attached documents.
Born and raised in Buffalo, New York and worked up made serious "sparring" like a boxer before the war and fought for the championship at Fort Dix. It was about 5 '9 "and 185 lbs. Wounded in Belgium, returned to the States at Fort Dix. New Jersey my mother, the family went to visit him and walked beside his bed – weighed only 88 pounds!
He said the Fourth Division derivatives beyond the objective of landing on D-Day The result somehow less people than some of the other landings. I have included the command post infantry that details of his eighth place through four fights en route to Germany. In this piece, I marked LOMMERSWEILER January 31, 1945, Belgium. That day, Private James went with another soldier when a Nazi Tiger tank opened fire on the hill, they are running. A huge piece of shrapnel penetrated his thigh (I will not to make you sick here, but could fit four fingers in the leg joint). He was separated from his team and lying in the snow during the fourteen hours. In some Thus, with the help of Major (Doctor) Mr. Kenneth Alford (also from Buffalo, NY), saved the leg. Buffalo Newspapers included him in its list of "Honest of War Dead, "as he was separated from his unit and had lost track (I included these items in the folder). She told the surprised faces on people he thought he was dead when he returned to Buffalo. From 31 January 1945 until his release on January 16, 1946, spent his time in hospitals in Europe and New Jersey.
With one leg about an inch and a half shorter than the other, has worked for years at the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo, New York and has been a great employee, the best father and a man can have.
Before being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge on December 4, 1944, his unit was ordered to retreat to another doctor, got three injured after enemy lines to the city, making three trips because they had a litter bearer. My father told me I could hear hundreds of Nazis pass within twenty yards, and that the exercise of their return trips to the men to safety.
After all, I really do not think he has any money to him. In 1955, he wrote for his good conduct medal and the Combat Medical Badge. On March 5, 1956, received the Bronze Star. On 18 May 1959, received the Purple Heart. His family and friends are very proud to have known a man. He died in 1983 at 100% service-connected disability. The "wheel" has been a soldier and a proud great man.
I've never been in the service, but certainly a welcome to those who served. World War II generation is indeed very special as they are all those who risk their lives for America. The story of the soldier of World War II is dedicated to all nurses who have helped us in every war.
